THE HIGHLIGHTERS BAND A1, THE FUNKY 16 CORNERS (PT 1) B1, THE FUNKY 16 CORNERS (PT2) 'The Funky 16 Corners' by The Highlighters Band is one of those legendary and elusive 45s known by many only as a Keb Darge spin. It's a record that's on top of his play-list and is on everyone's want-list - not just because of its rarity, but because as far as funk 45s go it's without a doubt one of the funkiest, meanest, rawest and, quite simply, best records of the genre ever made. Writer and singer James Bell remembers: 'I was in the bathroom on my lunch-break, I put a piece of cardboard over the commode and wrote it in about 10 minutes. The next day we were in the studio and we recorded it in one take'. That was August 1969, and although the band recorded other records under the Highlighters name and later the Rhythm Machine, this was to be their finest moment - funky drumming that oozes finesse, mean & heavy bass, tight horns and a sock-it-to-me scream that Mr James Brown himself couldn't better.
